The car was last smogged in California in 1997, shortly after the BAR’s system went digital: https://i.imgur.com/oSyjHJV.png

Even though it was already 25 years old at that point, the fact that it was smogged at all in California that long ago suggests to me that it may have originally been a California car. I’m very interested to know what colors it was, which dealership it was sold at, what the original license plate sequence was, and where it is now.

It was obviously repainted in Dark Blue (904) at some point in its life, but the fact that they repainted the door jambs too makes me think it was a color change (like almost all of the super early cars I’ve seen). It’s so odd to me how terribly kept the super early ones were. You’d think that with earliest serial number, anyone who owned it over the years would know to preserve its originality.

All good questions. I’m surprised there would be a CA smog record for it. It would never had needed to be smogged. We’ve found the majority of the very early 4.5L cars have seemed to be located in the Pacific Northwest. It might be interesting to follow up with the seller in Germany to get that info. Only other way to get it is to pay Mercedes $150 for it.
